Today’s buzzword: ChatGPT.

According to SimilarWeb, ChatGPT is ranked #6 globally and received 6.2 billion visits in October 2025. Artificial Intelligence is changing the world and consequently the way people search online for the services and products you have to offer. Today, Houston SEO owner Melissa Emerson is going to share what she has discovered as AI shapes the business landscape for search engine optimization, and how to optimize your site for the future of search, so your phone never goes silent.

First, the good news: AI is not new to the algorithm. Since 2015, AI has been integrated into Google search algorithms. We have been dealing with this for years, and as we look around, the sky hasn’t fallen. The reality is that, because of AI and not in spite of the fact that there is more potential for those who use SEO than ever before, if you know how to harness the power of it (and we’ll discuss that in this blog post!)

But first lets catch some of our readers up to speed with” What is local SEO?” Search engine optimization ensures that when someone enters specific keywords relevant to your business services, your website is visible, and anything past page one, you're missing out on all the action of having a steady flow of leads.

As of the start of 2026, there are no optimization techniques that have been designed for artificial intelligence, but from countless hours of testing, what we can say is that those of us who adhere to SEO guidelines have a better chance of also showing up in AI search results in addition to Google, Bing, and Yahoo which is now and forever will be the primary source for consumers seeking local services such as home service.

Now for the fun part,

How to compete and win with local SEO in Houston

There are two key factors to succeeding with search engine optimization (local Seo). The first is Google My Business (GMB), the section that shows where you are on the map and where potential clients can read your stellar reviews. This is also what Houston business owners more commonly refer to as local SEO. Be sure to read our blog post on how to optimize your GMB profile.

Today, we are going to focus on on-page SEO, which begins by building out your website. A typical website has only 4 to 5 pages of content (Home, About Us, Our Services, Contact Us). This type of brochure site doesn't generate much content for Google, and when it comes to SEO, content is King! The good news is you have plenty of content to provide Google, but it may take some serious work. Most of our Houston SEO clients offer a list of services for which to create subpages, such as

Services (main page) + service 1 (subpage) service #2 (subpage) service #3 (subpage) so forth and so on so that each service you offer has a page to shine, thus creating content, In addition to services you also want to create pages for each of the cities you serve such as Houston, Katy, Sugar Land the Woodlands, etc.

Step 2:Optimize Pages

Once the pages are built for each of your core services and the cities you service, each of your pages needs to be optimized from an SEO perspective so that the search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing) understand what the page is about and rank your site for those keywords. Here are some of the most essential items that need to be taken care of for on-page search engine optimization:

  • Unique title tag on each page

  • H1 tag restating the title tag on each page. The An

  • Images named with primary keywords

  • URL should contain the page keyword

  • Anchor text on each page and built into the footer

  • XML Sitemap should be created and submitted to Google Webmaster Tools and Bing Webmaster Tools

Once the pages are built out and the “on-page” SEO is complete, the next step is getting inbound links. Everything we have done up to this point is like laying the foundation for a home. In order to build a brick-and-mortar business, you need a foundation, and the same is true of your digital store; you need a solid foundation. However, if you want to not only compete but win, then the number of QUALITY inbound links to those pages is crucial, as they are going to determine placement. How important is ranking? When was the last time you went searching on Google past the first page results? Your customers aren't very different in the way they search to find you.

Once the pages are built out, you are just getting started. The only way to get your site to rank above your competition is by having MORE quality inbound links to your site.

30% of SEO is On-Page type work. The other 70% is Link Building.

Once your web pages have all been created and optimized for success, the “on-page” portion of Houston SEO is complete; the next step is much tougher: getting high-authority inbound links. Where do you get links? That would take an entire blog to describe, but here are a few great places to get started.

  • Association Links– Be sure that you have a link to your website from any industry associations that you belong to (law firm or medical association, Chamber of Commerce, networking groups, etc.).

  • Directory Listings – Get your site listed on as many directories as possible (Angie’s List, Yahoo Local Directory, Judy’s Book, Yelp.com, etc.).

  • Create interesting content/articles about your industry. This is the #1 source of inbound links because you can write an article about your industry and push it out to thousands of article directory sites, each containing a link back to a specific page on your site.
